It may sound barking but valerian, a herbal remedy for anxiety and sleeplessness, could be the perfect solution for calming the frazzled nerves of cats and dogs this Fireworks Night.

Fireworks displays will be taking place across the country around Guy Fawkes night, causing many cats and dogs to experience high levels of fear, anxiety and apprehension. Just as it is the herbal supplement of choice for many anxious flyers, valerian could also help cats and dogs over come their Fireworks Night nerves.

The herbal remedy, which is extracted from the roots of a riverside plant, was used by ancient Greeks for its calming properties and continues to be popular today as it helps relax the body without any of the side effects associated with pharmaceutical sedatives such as valium. And pet owners today are increasingly seeing the benefits as they realise that when it comes to calming down Fluffy, valerian really is the cat’s whiskers.

Valerian is available from Boots, Waitrose and all good independent health food stores and pharmacies.

It is a known fact that the members of the family felidae are not quite friendly in their behavior and also is said to posses zero tolerance towards strangers that is towards the members belonging to the other families in the animal kingdom.

Domestic cat is one of the prime members belonging to the feline family but the human beings for centuries together have inculcated certain soft qualities are harnessed them to their best possible ability to domesticate cats and change the breed in to what they are toady. In our own small ways we the act owners must also try to do our part so that our pet kitty does not become a menace for the locality in which we reside.

If we are to consider the opinion of a vet or consult him he will be able to provide us with the right statistics which will show us the number of cats that are brought to the veterinary hospitals to be put to sleep because of behavioral problems. The problems are far more distinguished in cats than in dogs.

The behavioral problems are breed specific that is most of the cats belonging to the Siamese origin are seen to have the nasty habit of wool chewing, the aggressive cats of the Burmese decent are in reality are very panicky sort of cats, the cute looking Persian cats possess the horrible habit of soiling of the house.

Often misbehavior can be the result of inheritance that is your can be the royal heir of a host of misbehavior which can be the result of stress or perceived stress on the part of your cat. He can also have received some or the other mental disorder from the parents. The corrections are to be made early in his life.

The owner of the cat should try and see to it that he or she is sociable with outsiders from the very beginning of her life that is while she is still a kitten. Otherwise later in future the situation can get out of hand and then it is expected of the act to behave roughly to others and she may even try to bite your guest of honor.

The cat has some traits which are inherent to the feline family and should not be recognized as misbehavior unless it is affecting you or your interests like for example a female cat in heat that is at the time when they are ready to mate, they spray their urine on the bushes so that the males are attracted this is a normal activity however if your cat sprays urine in the home on your sofa then it is misbehavior and she requires treatment.

Lastly diseases which might have gone undetected for a long time can also lead to adverse changes in the character and behavioral patterns of your otherwise meek and docile pet cat. If you sense any adverse change in your sweet angel rush him to her most preferred vet.

There comes a time when all the cat lovers are left wondering as to why their cat is behaving in a particular way. There are various behavioral patterns in relation to cats and all animals have secret language of their own. If one really wants to understand the cat behavior he should begin his study from the past when the cats where wild.

We feel happy when our pet cats jump on our laps and purr, but it is not necessary that a cat which purrs is in a happy mood. There are chances that the purring cat is in great pain or is undergoing immense distress. There are cats which purr while giving birth too, are they happy? Not necessarily. Purring usually takes place when cats want to show that they are approachable and friendly in nature. Even kittens that are just two or three years old will purr, but their purring is very difficult to hear, but as they get older their purrs become louder. Purring is basically a signal to the parent cat that the kitten is content in what she is getting from her.

Another behavioral pattern amongst cats is greeting. These animals usually greet each other by rubbing their faces. There are a few cats who greet by standing on their hind legs; this behavior is generally a sign that it wants to reach your face. Such greeting is only done to human being who the cat trusts. Another way a cat greets its owner is by rolling on its back and stretching its legs as far as possible, these are signs of a lazy cat. Cats which are more active in nature will probably rub it self against your legs. All cats have scent glands around their mouth and temple and while they rub against your legs they rub the scent against you, which is sign for the cats.

Some times when a cats jumps on your stomach or while its sitting on your lap its starts to retract and extend its claws and we are often kept wondering why the cat does this. Such behavior is known as kneading. This behavior comes from the time when these cats where kitten, kneading was done while sucking so as to make the milk flow easily. Adult cats knead when they feel around you; they normally consider their owners as surrogate mothers. Since these cats have been pampered all their life they will obviously retain some of their kitten characteristics.

Behaviour of cats, which most of us have experienced is gifting their owners. Their cats bring in dead birds or creatures. This is there way of gifting their owners, this is a completely natural behavior and their owners should not punish them for such behaviors. In relation to kittens these cats get their preys to their kittens, such an act is often done to introduce the kittens to hunting. Cats which have been neutered do not have their own kittens and that is why they bring their pray home.
